Has anyone used Accutane for acne control? I read that Accutane is often prescribed by dermatologists for acne. Most times they prescribe an anti-bacterial, but it also said vitamin A - Accutane - as well.
Has anyone ever used it? If so, is it something that can be bought at local stores in the vitamin section, or is it specially prescribed? Any side effects?
Thanks for any info!

Birth Control for acne, pros and cons? i have bad acne before and after my period. i've tried proactiv and all the other brands pretty much. I've even tried home remedies and taking vitamins and such. nothing seems to control my acne. i heard from friends that the birth control helped alot. my mom thinks birth control is something i shouldn't try. i'm 16, by the way.
i'm just looking for all possible pros and cons that i might get if i went on birth control.
also, if you have taken any birth control that helped your acne due to your period.
Chaitali N replied: "drink plenty of water and consult ur physician."
A.J replied: "it really does work for most people , it did for me but its your age thats why its bad"
Samflighter replied: "Acne is a bundle of skin rashes formed over skin due to the action of hormones on the sebaceous glands. Your roommate has been taking the antibiotic tetracycline for 2 years to control her acne. ? While having routine blood work, it is revealed that she has a vitamin deficiency. Which of the following is an adequate explanation for her vitamin deficiency?
a. antibiotics kill the normal flora (resident bacteria) of the intestinal tract which is responsible for synthesizing certain vitamins
b. None of these are adequate explanations.
c. antibiotics can bind to vitamins in the intestinal tract and prevent their absorption
d. taking antibiotics for extended periods of time slows down metabolism

How do I get rid of or at least control the acne on my face? I have a lot of blackheads on my nose and chin and some blackheads on my cheeks and forehead. Also I have a lot of little bumps all over my forehead. Sometimes I get humongous pimples on my face and back that take forever to heal. My forehead is oily because of my bangs and the rest of my face is dry. I know as a teenager that I'll ve acne on my face, chest and back, but that doesn't mean I want it.
What's the best treatment?
Right now I'm using Noxzema Long Lasting Micro bead Cleanser, but it doesn't work and for a moisturizer I use Avalon Organics Vitamin C Oil-Free moisturizer which I love.
There are a few things I should mention:
1. I'm really poor
2. I don't shop at Walmart
3. I'm not going to buy proactive
4. I would like to use a water soluble cleaner, not facial wipes or pads
5. I don't have insurance so I'm not going to go to a dermatologist
6. I'm a pretty healthy eater and I drink lots of water
Omar H replied: "You could try some acme reducing face wash from neutrogena, thats supposed to be pretty affective."

and i also dont use moisturizer, caz it doesnt work for me, makes my face oily and worse.......i had acne for 2 years but ever since i started using Nutregena it's going away.....hope it helps :)"

niki replied: "well if you have a pool, that helps with acne because of the clorena in it. you zits will open up and clean out and then alls you really can do is keep washing your face. they also have pills you can take that will control your acne"
Samflighter replied: "1) Cook oatmeal and apply on face for fifteen minutes and wash.
2) Make a warm bath with blanch of nettle and rosemary.
3) Apply equal amount of lemon juice and rose water with a cotton ball and wash it after haif an hour for 15 to 20 days.

Do acne and acne scars eventually go away with birth control? I've always had a bit of acne, and I started using ProActiv (which works wonderfully, by the way - leaves my skin feeling very clean and refreshed) and it did clear up noticeably in the time between my periods. Several days before my period I would get annoying zits (the deep kind that hurt to touch), but nothing too bad. I'm in high school - everyone gets acne, right, so what do I care about a couple of zits?
However, I've always had moderate acne on my chest and back. Just small ones on my chest that aren't really noticeable, they're just small bumps with no noticeable redness, and on my back I'd get a mixture of those with big zits.
I started taking Yasmin28 about three weeks ago, and since I began the acne on my face has been getting a lot worse. Generally I would get zits on my chin and forehead, but since I began taking the pill I've been getting acne in places where I've NEVER gotten it before - my cheeks, just under my jaw, sometimes even my thighs.
It wouldn't be a huge deal to me if they just went away, but they don't. Regardless of whether I pick them or not, they leave red or relatively dark, discoloured marks that don't go away for what feels like forever. I still have some scattered along my chin from when I first started getting acne a few years ago! I'm not sure if those count as scars, though, so I don't know if I want to try any Vitamin E oil or cocoa butter (I've been told that helps) because I'm scared that will clog my pores and make me break out even more.
I keep hearing that, with birth control, acne gets worse before it gets better, but I'd really like an idea of how long this will take. One girl told me it takes six months, but in other places I'm hearing 2-3 months tops if my acne wasn't severe before starting the pill.
And I really just feel like I can't win lately when I wash my face. Wherever I focus on washing (wherever my acne is worst at the time) I start to get zits elsewhere as if to make up for it. >.< For example, if I focus on washing my T-zone, I get acne on my cheeks. It's really annoying. And I don't want to take any antibiotics to help it, because I need my birth control to be as effective as possible.
Any help is intensely appreciated!
lucy replied: "3 weeks is not long enough to decide if Yasmin is working for you or not. I would wait at least 3 or 4 months and if you still haven't seen any improvement you can try switching to another pill. Ortho Tri-Cyclen is supposed to work well for acne."

is it bad to go on birth control for acne? im 15 years old and I have had acne on my chest, back, and shoulders (but never on my face) for about a year now and it seems like its never going to go away. I tried an antibiotic called Doxycycline for about 2 months but it had no effect on my acne. I also use Neutrogena's acne body wash. it helps to remove excess oils but it doesn't really get rid of the zits. in addition to that, i take Rainbowlight active teen multivitamins that is supposed to clear acne. i take three a day. (thats the max amount you can take daily) if i dont forget to take my vitamins every day then i have no acne on my chest but if i forget then the next day im completely broken out. the vitamins have no effect on my back or shoulders though and i dont have a clue why. so i have been questioning if i should take birth control. it would be nice to have the pill for cramps, bloating and a shorter period too but i mostly want it for acne. any advice?
mzboyd15 replied: "I went on the pill when I was 15 for my acne. Totally cleared my skin and it helped with the cramps. It's also very nice to know exactly when you are going to get your period. I would definitely suggest it!"
wut replied: "no its fine, my sister used to have horrible acne and she never knew when her period would come and her period would last for ever and it would be painful and it helped her out"
Banana Blitz replied: "The other two have had success and that is great but DEFINETLY do LOTS of research on this. Certain birth control pills can be fatal that is why a number of them have been pulled off the market. Talk to your parents as well before taking something high risk as that."

Is it okay to take pre-natal vitamins while on birth control? I have been on the depo shot for almost two years, and I have recently started taking pre-natal vitamins (as a vegetarian diet supplement). Is this okay to do? I have only noticed breakouts and acne so far..
Law & Order: Intarwebz Unit 2.0 replied: "Yes, it's safe. Pre-natal vitamins contain all of the same minerals as regular vitamins do, just in slightly different (usually larger) doses. There's no reason to believe that it would react negatively with birth control, at least any more than a regular vitamin would. Pre-natal vitamins are probably your best bet if you're on a vegetarian diet, so I'd keep taking them. A lot of doctors will actually recommend them for reasons other than pregnancy, because of all the nutrients they contain.
Make sure you eat a lot of bran and dark green veggies to keep your iron levels up."
Juice Plus - U gotta Try It! replied: "I recommend Juice Plus as it is 17 different fruits and veggies juiced, then the water gets taken out, so only the nutrients are left. Then just the nutrients are powderized and put into a capsule. So, it's kind of like you are eating 17 different fruits and veggies right off the get-go when you start your day. To me, and thousands of others and hundreds of doctors, Juice Plus is a much better choice than Vitamins as you get the nutrients directly from the fruits and veggies, rather than in a supplement form. Acne, new birth control, fish oil, flaxseed....help!? Hi,
well, I have had pretty good skin for awhile now. I had trouble with breakouts (cystic at times), some blackheads, whiteheads, etc. when I was in high school (about 3-4 years ago). My dermotologist put me on Differin Gel and it worked really well. Since then, skins been great, I don't even need to use the Differin all the time, just once or twice a week. Around my period every month i might get a a few pimples but nothing too big or bad. I even went for months recently without having to buy a new concealer after I ran out because I didn't need it! My skin was great!
Now...out of NO WHERE...i've been breaking out. Lots of smaller pimples, and now just yesterday ive started developing a big cystic one on my forehead. As a result of the earlier acne, 2 weeks ago I bought some concealer/powder that is oil free and I used to use in the past. I havent been using it too much but obviously more than I have in a long time. I know this could be the cause of the acne, but i don't think so, my skin has never been sensitive to oil free makeup and i don't use it in excess and I rinse it off at night/when I get home.
SOOOO....there are a few other culprits. I started birth control for the first time in maybe a year about 3 mos ago. It has been like 2 years since I was on it for a long period of time. It's Yaz birth control and its been ok. My period is always nuts...esp. on birth control for the first few (up to 6) months. It will do what it wants...AKA come when it was supposed to (before I was on BC) and then keep coming when I start taking the placebo pills, so this month I've had my period for like 10 days. My doc says its ok as long as it regulates in a few months.
Buuuut...birth control is supposed to help/stop acne! Not cause MORE!
One other thing might be the vitamins ive been taking. Ive been taking this Heart Healthy Pack for like 6 months now...it contains: a fishoil capsule, a flaxseed capsule, vitamin B complex, vitamin E, and COQ10 enzyme. I also take 2 capsules of milk thistle a day. I more recently (but at least a month ago) started adding another fish oil capsule on in the evening because i found out i was only taking half the reccomended amount to help hair, nails, and skin.
I think the only possible things contributing to acne could be the birth control, the extra fish oil (but ive researched and found NOTHING that says fish oil can cause acne, only help skin), or the milk thistle (but i researched that and there are no reports of milk thistle effecting the skin at all).
Sooo this is long and I doubt anyone will take the time to read it...but I need help! Has anyone gotten acne from birth control...especially yaz? Or from fish oil, milk thistle, or flaxseed??
Helpppp.
Helen N replied: "What's happening is the breakouts are hormonal. The Birth control is supposed to regulate your periods and therefore your hormones. But you're also taking all these vitamins for a longer time frame already. Now your body does not know what it's supposed to do with so much you're taking.
Try this: Cut out milk and dairy products from your diet. Eat a low carb like little sugar as possible. No white rice, stick to brown rice and wheat bread. Eat grilled chicken, baked fish as little fried foods as possible.
Cutting out these foods will make you less hormonal. By eating better, it will make your skin better.
Also how late are you sleeping? Sleep early as possible, before 12am. Sleeping late causes havoc on your skin too.
I had acne while on Yaz and I was taking Multi vitamin everyday. And I had the cystic acne.
It was until my dermatologist told me to sleep early, and eat better, that I saw the acne go away. It took about 2 weeks to see results.
If the cystic acne is really bad and painful go to your dermatologist. Get a cortisone shot to heal the acne quick. Good luck!"

Is this too much for a teen? please please help!!acne!!! K, i have some bad acne, and I use a cleanser 2 times a day
I dont eat any saefood, and I heard that fish is good for your skin
so, omega 3 is in fish so will these vitamins help me with my acne?
1 vitamin C
1 zinz 15mg
1 multivitamin
1 omega 3
pleas dont say try proactiv, because i have already tried that.
Im currently using neutrogena acne stress control
srry, i ment to say zinc, instead on zinz
and also i meant to say seafood, instead of saefood
Renie replied: "Remember Acne is bacteria. Go to Walmart (cheapest store) to purchase Purell Hand Sanitizer and apply twice daily to a clean face."
Holli replied: "Have you tried going to a dermatologist? If you can afford to go for an appt, see if they can give you some free trials of what they hand out.
I also use the same Neutrogena scleanser. I love it and feel fresher every time."
Gone fishin' replied: "See a dermatologist. Don't mess around with stuff like purell on your face. Acne is more than just bacteria or an antibiotic would cure it. Acne is complicated."

I have cystic acne which I have only been able to control using Doxycyline. Anything elses I can try? Doxycycline is an antibiotic that's given for acne. Are there any types of vitamins or natural products that are effective for this? I don't want to spend the rest of my life using antibiotics. I've tried Proactive and other creams and stuff. Nothing else has worked.
nikki sixx replied: "Probably accutane. Go to a derm"
Amy replied: "I struggled with acne for years and I finally found the solution that works for me. We have been fooled, tricked, deceived, and just plain lied to. It's time that someone put a stop to it, and everyone learn the truth!
Those of us who suffer from acne have usually been given 2 choices and neither of them work:
1. Over the counter remedies such as cleansers, creams, ointments, etc. These things have been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem.
2. Go see a doctor and or dermatologist. They will generally prescribe prescription drugs which include topicals and or antibiotics. This, too, has been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem.
I found a step-by-step program that cured my acne and it has never come back. It is amazing and doesn’t use any drugs or doctors. The truth is that acne can be cured…if we know the secret the doctors and drug companies don’t want us to know.
There is a great website: that has all the details. I really suggest you check it out and see if it works as well for you as it did for me."
